Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, and the number one cancer in many developing nations, killing over 270,00 women every year. Yet cervical pre-cancer can be detected and treated with up to a 95% cure rate.
At the same time, the numbers of women and girls who are being kidnapped, sold or tricked into sexual slavery and involuntary prostitution is also rising rapidly around the world. Women are often abducted and raped when they are between 6 and 12 years old. They are coerced, beaten, and starved into submission, and frequently trafficked into other countries. Those who survive are left with little or no education, skills or other resources. They are stigmatized and disgraced in the eyes of their families and communities, so frequently they cannot go home.
These women are at a very high risk of exposure to the human papilloma virus, or HPV, which causes cervical cancer; and they are the least likely to have the resources for diagnosis and treatment.
The number of women forced into prostitution worldwide is rapidly growing, now estimated at 1 million per year. There are a growing number of international agencies offering counseling, training and support to the survivors of sexual exploitation . Unfortunately, expensive gynecology medical care is not readily available, especially in poor communities. PINCC works with these agencies to supply this life-saving care.
The Alliance For Cervical Cancer Prevention recently completed a 5-year project to develop and test innovative methods of finding and treating cervical cancer. Their research proved the effectiveness of the single-visit techniques for cervical cancer prevention in developing countries. PINCC is implementing those techniques for high-risk women without access to care around the world.
PINCC's teams will bring proven mobile technology to the women in their own language and in a supportive setting. In a single visit, we will provide education, diagnosis and treatment of pre-cancer of the cervix.
